At the start of the watersports season, everyone is eager to get out on the water again. But is that still possible given the coronavirus?
In the Netherlands, it is still allowed to go outside and engage in nature. However, when doing so, keep in mind the RIVM guidelines. Now that we sit inside as much as possible and stick to social distancing, according to lung specialist at Rotterdam Erasmus MC, Menno van der Eerden, it is also good to go outside once in a while to get some fresh air. And where better to do that than on the water? Welcome to the water gives you tips to enjoy the outdoors even in times of coronavirus.
Many water sports can be done well alone or at a distance from each other where possible. For example, you are alone on a surfboard, supboard and you can also do fine alone in a canoe. Of course, you can also do these kinds of activities together, but even on the water, make sure you keep 1.5 metres distance. This also applies to a motorboat or sailboat. Preferably sail with roommates and take into account the size of the boat and the number of people on board.
Avoid crowded places where many people get on or off their boats or boards at the same time. This is to limit the spread of the virus.
Above all, go out on the water, but keep it nice and relaxed. Accidents are never meant to happen, but not at this time at all. The hospitals are already busy enough with the coronavirus.
Not everyone lives right next to the water. Therefore, try to use bicycles or cars as much as possible to avoid public transport dispersion.
Restaurants and cafes are closed due to the corona virus. So make sure you carry enough food and drink yourself.
Going outside can do no harm, provided you keep in mind the RIVM guidelines. Take responsibility yourself and keep an eye on RIVM's updates.
Note: Several regional waterway authorities are taking measures due to Corona virus. Up-to-date reports are on the message page of www.vaarweginformatie.nl
Before you go, also check in your own municipality whether marinas, beaches, campsites, etc. are still open. Municipalities have the power to close them should they not comply with the RIVM rules. Be alert to this. Go out on the water, get some fresh air, but remember to keep a 1.5m distance and do not gather in groups.
